Un giovane vestito con un lungo trench scuro si introduce nella scuola.
Si odono degli spari in una classe del complesso artistico della scuola, che consiste in quattro sale collegate tra loro con corridoi interni e altre sale.
Le due aule prese di mira da un ignoto sparatutto sono collegate da una stanza a cui il tiratore ha avuto accesso forzando una finestra della porta.
Secondo la testimonianza di una vittima ferita, il tiratore è entrato nell'aula cantando "Another One Bites the Dust" tra un colpo e l'altro..
Secondo un altro testimone, gli studenti si sono barricati nell'armadio della classe e il tiratore ha sparato attraverso la porta con un fucile da caccia.
Poi ha lasciato la stanza, dando il tempo agli studenti per uscire dall'armadio e tentare di barricare la porta, ma il killer è riuscito ad aprirla. Dopo aver individuato uno studente che conosceva, ha detto "Sorpresa!" sparandogli nel petto.

Dimitrios Pagourtzis, uno studente 17enne della scuola, era stato vittima di bullismo da parte di più studenti e allenatori. La scuola ha negato le accuse di bullismo.
Uno dei suoi ex insegnanti lo ha descritto come "tranquillo ma in modo inquietante".
I diari di Dimitri sul suo computer e sul suo cellulare, trovati dalla polizia dopo la sparatoria, suggeriscono che voleva suicidarsi dopo la sparatoria e che aveva pianificato di farlo da qualche tempo.

Un suo account Instagram mostra che seguiva numerosi account relativi alle armi, tra cui "Fucili da Caccia", "Immagini di Pistole" ed altri chiamati Guns Fanatics, Guns Lovers e Guns Glory.
Dimitri è oggi affidato in custodia presso un ospedale psichiatrico di massima sicurezza.
È stato giudicato incapace di intendere e di volere.

Armato di un fucile semi-automatico in stile AR-15 e di più riviste, attiva un allarme antincendio e inizia a sparare indiscriminatamente contro studenti e insegnanti.
Verso le 14:21, un membro del personale ode gli spari e attiva un codice rosso di blocco. Un ufficiale armato dell'ufficio dello sceriffo della contea di Broward che era nel campus rimane fuori tra l'Edificio 12 e l'edificio adiacente 7.
La sparatoria dura sei minuti. Al primo piano, il killer ha sparato nel corridoio e in quattro classi, uccidendo undici persone. Il 7 marzo 2018, Nicholas si presenta davanti ad un Grand Jury per rispondere di 34 accuse: 17 per omicidio di primo grado e 17 per tentato omicidio di primo grado. L'accusa ha chiesto la pena di morte.
Il 30 maggio 2018, i pubblici ministeri pubblicano tre video che Nicholas aveva registrato sul suo cellulare prima della sparatoria.
